EXCELLENT COUPLES' DAY

We have just got back from a lovely whole day at Green Pastures with an event for married couples which went off wonderfully well. 16 couples took part and the speakers were Pastor Umbirajara (João Pessoa), Pastor Lindon Carlos (Imaculada) and myself. The whole event was organized by Pastor Gersé. It was unanimously decided at the end that we will hold a similar, but bigger, event like today later in the year. It was a day for relection on one's marriage teaching Christian values relevant to the theme. It was a real day of blessing. PTL! Thank you for praying.

MINISTERS' FELLOWSHIP

I chaired the Patos Ministers' Fellowship meeting today and all went off very well. We carried out a full scale evaluation of the united churches outreach earlier this month.

Liz and I have visited Jandira (the late Graham Mundy's widow) who had her gall bladder removed yesterday. She is recovering well in the Patos General Hospital. We met up with Dr. Paula whilst there and looked over all the work she is doing as Director to humanise the place. She is carrying out a real revolution. Please pray for her.

Philip will be flying back from the UK tomorrow after two weeks work in England, Wales and Scotland.

I am now very glad to be able to tell you that my right black shoe was heeled today and has left intensive care. Alegre The specialist says the pair will need new soles (even more serious) soon but I feel that the way we have won this battle today we will overcome one day! Jóia

WEDDINGS AHEAD!

I do hereby solemnly declare...

that on August 1st Sacha (our youngest daughter) is to marry Biba. They are the parents of Alice who will be two the day before the wedding. Alegre It's all different these days. Alegre May the Lord bless Sacha, Biba and Alice. Please pray for them. They have managed to get a mortgage on a nice little house on the south side of town very near to where Dr. Paula lives.

Then on October 10th it will be Lynn's wedding day. Lynn is our second daughter. Lynn will be marrying Hutan. Lynn is the mother of John David. May the Lord bless Lynn, Hutan and John David. Alegre Please pray for them too. They will live in an apartment exactly opposite the English School. Bob & Jo Dalton will be coming from the UK for this wedding.

Then just over a month later, on November 15th, it will be Liz and I's 40th Wedding Anniversary! Muito feliz It's certainly a weddingy year! Esportista

BRAZIL IN THE CONFEDERATION CUP FINAL... AGAIN!

I have just watched Brazil deservedly beat South Africa 1 x 0 in a very tight match. Brazil played against the 60,000 crowd and South Africa's Brazilian manager who knows the Brazilian team inside out. It was an honourable way for South Africa to go out.

I totally disagree with the BBC's description of Brazil in the match: "unconvincing, lethargic, struggled". Brazil played cautiously and patiently after seeing what happened to Spain yesterday, but when the time came Daniel Alves silenced the stadium and Brazil's plan worked to perfection. We're in the final!

I incorrectly reported earlier than Ben Price and family were in Patos today to see the doctors. In fact they were on their way to Natal Airport to meet supporters Lewis and Joshua from the Basingstoke Community Church. I got the story right over lunch. Alegre

Tragically my dear black shoe, that has served me faithfully for so long, is in need of heeling! Chorão The heel on the right foot has come adrift and is dangling precariously. Chorão Knowing how unfeeling Liz can be about these moments I am not asking for her opinion but sending the shoe to be glued in the morning. It is going to be a long night awaiting the verdict! Triste

BIBLE COLLEGE

I have been working on the Bible College schedules for the coming semester in both the Patos and Princesa Isabel Colleges. I am going to spend a day with the students of the Princesa Isabel College on July 11th.

Ben & Miriam Price (& family) are coming into Patos today for further medical check-ups. It is always a joy to see them. Their little boy, Josias, is very happy because he opened his bedroom window last week and there were 6 little monkeys (Marmosets) playing outside which soon ventured up to the window to accept food! Alegre

Tonight is expected to be the night that will attract the biggest crowd of all the nights in the Patos St. John's Festival. This is because some very famous singers are coming. A 20 year old man in Patos died of a heart attack a few weeks ago when their coming was announced. Dr. Paula and the hospital she directs is apprehensive and with a larger team of doctors and nurses than normal to cope with eventual accidents etc.

Tomorrow is the Patos Ministers's Fellowship's monthly meeting which I will be chairing as usual. Then on Saturday we have a day at Green Pastures for all the couples from church. It will be a sort of fellowship day with talks on improving your marriage and things like this.

ST. JOHN'S DAY

This was one of a large number of snakes that I saw yesterday morning on my bi-weekly walk. Yesterday I walked farther than normal - about 8 miles.

This particular snake was about two metres long and stretched out on the dead branch of a tree. That is its head upper left. The snake got fatter as it went down and its lower end was coiled round the branch.

At another place I found a whole load of snakes in "reproductive activities" in the hollow of a tree. The snakes kept coming in and out of the tree. This is the breeding season for the snakes so we see more about than normal and we need to be extra careful.

Today is St. John's Day and I thank you all for the cards you thought of sending but didn't get round to! Bem humorado Actually the current St. John's Festival here is much quieter than previous years for which we are grateful.

I have been informed by the State Government of Paraíba that I have been given the State's Green Award "given to institutions or individuals who make outstanding contributions to the environment". I must say it was a total surprise and whilst happy to receive it am blowed if I can figure out why I deserve it. I suppose the 15 years of Moringa Tree Project has been important as our more recent work with the Neem tree plus our work over the last 30 years in defense of the environment at Green Pastures and the community education work linked to this. So praise the Lord anyway and all glory goes to Him who gave us the responsibility to take care of His earth anyway.

We passed the 49,000 visits mark to this blog yesterday. Another thousand and we'll reach a big mark. Many thanks to one and all.

ARCHITECT + ENGINEER

Liz and I have had an extensive meeting with our architect and civil engineer this afternoon. We first of all widely discussed the plans which are at present in our heads for the development of the Integral Mission Centre in Patos on land donated for this end by the Town Council. The architect now has the task of drawing up the initial draft plan proposals for our leadership's approval or alteration. We then went on to discuss the Patos church extension, Care Centre extension and office project which is on-going by faith and without money. The engineer is doing it and trusting us to pay him one day! The meeting will continue tomorrow.

Before we held the meeting this afternoon we visited the land donated by the Council so that the architect and engineer new what we were talking about. We have recently had the land cleared of loads of thorny bushes which have sprouted up with the rains so that we could see the land properly and walk round it without so much difficulty. Please pray for us as we take many decisions of great responsibility over the coming days and weeks. Please also pray for the Lord to provide the funding for these projects so important to the expansion of the work.

2nd EAB CAMPINA GRANDE CHURCH GOING VERY WELL

I made a good trip yesterday to preach at the 2nd EAB/ACEV Church in Campina Grande and got back at 11pm. Patos new convert Ismael went with me and we were able to have excellent conversations on the more than two hour journeys each way.

The church, under the leadership of Pastor Hamilton, is really floushing. There are 239 people in the church and I just don't know how they manage it as they meet in a temporary place of worship which is a house where they have covered the front garden with a temporary roof and still the congregation spills out on to the pavement and street! Quite amazing. They have bought land to build a church nearby and have only just received planning permission to start building.

I felt the church is nicely balanced with a real good spiritual atmosphere and unity. The P&W group is very good too. The church is miles from our central church in Campina Grande, being right on the southern outskirts of the city.

Today Liz and I have a meeting lined up with an arquitect and engineer about the project to be developed on the land donated by the Patos Town Council. We also continue to work on helping people badly affected by the floods as we now have received funding for this from the UK and so are discreetly and carefully using these funds where really needed.

MURDER ON SECOND NIGHT OF FESTIVAL

The 2nd night of the St. John's Festival was again marred by death - this time by murder within the dance area. A man pulled a gun and shot dead one and injured another!

Sunday School numbers were way down this morning but all went well. I took Pastor Schoeps's class as he was away in Natal on his degree course. He will be back this afternoon and preach in Patos tonight as I am off to preach at Campina Grande. Your prayers are valued.
