Brazil as I see it and live it

UPDATES

I wrote and dispatched the EAB Nutshell Update last night and this morning I received the ACEV Brazilian weekly Update from Sacha and, after adjusting some bits and adding a reflection, I dispatched this too.

I took Marian to visit the land donated by the Patos Council this morning for the construction of a Community Centre. I had a meeting of the Patos 'think-tank' leadership after that, and also managed to complete and send the report on the Patos School extension to the Scottish Charity, "Positive Steps", who were our partners in the endeavor. So much for a quiet Saturday morning!  Bem humorado

MINISTERS' FELLOWSHIP

I chaired the Patos Ministers Fellowship meeting this afternoon which had a good number present. The meeting was quite heavy going because of the RC manoeuvres, which have left us all reeling, and extended discussion ensued.

We have planned the annual "Bible Day" for December 12th and we organized the programme for this in the meeting too. The Patos Bible College graduation will be on December 19th.

LIZ BACK AT THE WHEEL

Liz was given the go ahead last night by the surgeon to return to driving as she feels able and in the amount she feels able to handle. Thus this morning she drove Marian to the Care Centre and acted as interpreter when Marian spoke to the Senior Citizens group. Liz is now home and pretty drained by the driving but it is a start. PTL!

I am preparing for the Ministers' Fellowship meeting at 4pm. I finished the proof reading and checking of the initial draft of EAB's InTouch magazine 77 last night, and Peter will get the corrected version back to me on Monday, so we should get it off to the printers on Tuesday.

FELIPE IS 12 TODAY!

Our eldest grandson, Felipe, is 12 today! Happy birthday Felipe! He is growing up into a fine young man and is an athletic cyclist and budding guitarist. He received a guitar for his birthday and we look forward to hearing him playing it in church. Alegre

Marian's baggage has finally arrived so things are a bit sweeter smelling around the house right now! Bem humorado Marian again left the house at 5.30am with me and Tarcísio today to climb up the Pico do Jabre which is the highest point in Paraíba State. We climbed the trail and it was very good. Marian is now preparing to speak to the Senior Citizens group in the morning at the Care Centre and to the Patos Church on Sunday evening.

My mum has had a cataract removed today and is now at home recovering. Please remember her in prayer.

I have received draft 1 of EAB's InTouch magazine, edition 77, from the editor. I will be checking it shortly.

STILL NO BAGGAGE!

Marian Rashleigh's baggage has still not arrived! São Paulo confirmed to me this morning that they sent it to Natal airport yesterday which is where it should have arrived on Sunday night! I have been trying to speak to TAP all day at Natal to try and find out what on earth they are playing around at but can get no sense out of anyone. So now I have phoned Madiel Filho who is a member of the Patos church and who is a student there. He is heading for the airport now to try and sort something out. Please pray.

This afternoon Marian went with Liz to visit the April flood victims who were helped in their recovery by EAB. This morning I had Marian up at 5.30am to go and find some wild parrots. It might sound incredible but parrots in this part of Brazil are very hard to find in the wild as so much trapping and selling goes on. We did manage to see one and photograph it. It was a lovely moment.

I have been sorting out all sorts of Patos Bible College issues today including the big problem we have which does seem to be nearing a solution. Thank you for praying.

Liz had an X-ray on her left knee this morning and a scan done on her left ankle which she broke about 3 months ago. The doctor thinks it will take another 3 to 6 months for Liz to get completely back to normal.  Please do continue to pray.

DOING IT IN STYLE

As is EAB custom our international visitor's first meeting was held with in north-eastern traditional costume so as to readily acclimatize the visitor to the local ways. Muito feliz

Today Marian has visited the Patos church extension work and the Care Centre + has a couple of hours walk at Green Pastures Farm.

I've just got back from the weekly church prayer meeting which has 21 this week.

Marian's baggage still hasn't turned up! Insatisfeito

MARIAN RASHLEIGH'S BRAZILIAN WELCOME!

This was how Liz and I welcomed Marian yesterday at Natal airport. For maximum embarassment impact this was waved inside the airport terminal and then in the car park where the car was parked in an OAP parking slot! Muito feliz

MARIAN RASHLEIGH ON DETOUR TO BRAZIL

With a 13 hour detour Marian should be arriving in Natal at 1.20pm today and Liz and I are just off to meet her. She must be utterly exhausted. Having missed her connection at Lisbon, through no fault of her own, she managed to get a flight overnight right down to the south of Brazil and she will have entered Brazil by now at São Paulo airport. She will now fly all the way back up to the north-east - arriving at Natal airport just 13 hours late! We will presumably have lunch together when she arrives and then travel the 4 hours by road to Patos.

I have just eaten fried egg with HP sauce! Muito feliz Philip brought be a bottle and Ivy brought me a giant bottle! More could be coming later with Marian! Liz also got stuck into some lovely cheese sent by Jon Payne last night and I had my first Ginger Nut biscuits in a year! Bobo

MARIAN STRANDED IN PORTUGAL

Liz, me, Philip & Ivy got to bed a little after midnight and were down for breakfast in a Recife hotel at 6.45am. We got away at 8am and arrived in Patos at 1.30pm which for the Kombi, and with Ivy on-board, was pretty good. Ivy and Philip had good flights and Philip, being a regular TAP traveller, was upgraded to first class but very kindly asked if his grandma couldn't travel first class in his place. This was agreed to so a very fresh and bouncy Ivy arrived in Recife. Nice one Philip! Jóia Alegre

When we got to Patos this afternoon we had lunch and then went to sleep ready to head for Natal to meet Marian Rashleigh. Just as we were about to leave Marian phoned to say she had unfortunately missed her very tight connection in Lisbon (45 minutes - TAP must be crazy) so she was stranded there with no TAP staff in sight to help! Oh dear! Hence we are now awaiting further instructions as we don't know if she is going to get a flight to another part of Brazil and then come to Natal, or what? Maybe she will only come tomorrow? We have 2 rooms booked in a Natal hotel for tonight so it looks as if they have had it. Please pray.

The grandchildren were all overjoyed to see great-grandma arrive back! Alice has developed in understanding over the 6 months Ivy has been away. In the early months Alice understood that "Mãe" (Mum - as Alice calls her because that's what she hears Liz and I call her) was circling somewhere in a plane all the time... but today she was saying that "Mãe" had come back from England!

This blog has passed the 55,000 visits point today. Many thanks to one and all. I have received an abundance of HP Sauce as a result of my blog appeals! Ivy's 4 cases (no that is not a typing error!) were loaded with it! I also have received a QPR Teddy from my Mum and a book of Bird Watching cartoons from Sam & Gerti in Switzerland. Just to give you a taste:

One bird watcher says to another out in the woods early one morning: "I don't know what it is, but whatever you do, don't make a noise like a worm"! Muito feliz
