Brazil as I see it and live it

EAB sets sail today!

70 years ago today Bert & Daisy Mundy, the EAB founders, set sail from Southampton Docks on the HMS Almanzora for a 12 day voyage in a 3rd class cabin (in the bowels of the ship) to Recife in north-east Brazil. They were bid farewell by about 60 supporters at the docks and most of the ladies wore hats, most of the boys wore caps and many of the men wore trilby hats. They prayed, they sang "I know the Lord will make a way for me", they wept and they waved farewell as the 16,000 ton cargo and passenger liner pulled out passed the Isle of Wight to head for the southern Atlantic.

August 20, 1938, was the day EAB was born and tonight at West Wellow (near Romsey) Chapel a special thanksgiving service will be held for all God has done over the past 70 years. The Chapel was the Mundy's home church. The service will be convened by Neil "Send the Light" Parsons - a member of the EAB UK Board. Please support this event if you possibly can and will someone kindly write me a brief report on the service and send me a group photo of those present. May God bless you all at the service tonight.

Happy Birthday Sacha!

Our youngest daughter, Sacha Elizabeth, is 22 today! Happy birthday Sacha! We love you lots and pray that God will bless your life always with your little treasure Alice.

Sacha will be pressing on as usual with the EAB ActionChild Report packages. I understand that she has so far sent 40 to the UK office and more should be going today.

I managed to finish and dispatch the ACEV weekly Brazilian Update late last night so that's out of the way for another week. I press on with the PowerPoint presentation for the UK churches today and am also sorting out the RE Council members as this finally does seem like it is going to come into existence.

Productive

Today is being a more productive day as, to start with, I am a lot less tired than I was yesterday. It is being a very intense day too with all I have to do in time for take-off on September 1st.

I have made good progress on the churches presentation (which is a relief) and I hope to get this finished by Thursday at the latest. I have also sorted the design and manufacture of the Moringa tree seed envelopes and should have them by tomorrow ready to be filled (with 7 seeds each) and stuck.

I have had extensive discussions with various EAB pastors: Wostenes (concerning projects), Gersé (projects + churches), Oseias (Conceição area - 4 decisions there last week) etc. I have also half prepared the weekly ACEV Brazilian Update. I have also been sorting out matters linked to the land donated to our NGO in Patos. And so it goes on...

The grandchildren are looking better... the youngest ones (Lucas & Alice) that is. This is a relief too. Thanks for praying.

Before Dawn

I am extremely tired today as I got back from Princesa Isabel very late and got to bed at 3am but at least it was before dawn! It was extremely cold up on the stage in the open-air service in front of the church. I don't know what the temperature was but it was far lower than we ever get in Patos and I was shivering. I wish I'd taken my overcoat. Despite this the sermon went well as did the whole service. Philip got on very well speaking there in the morning, from what I gather from all reports, and 12 new converts were baptised! PTL!

The grandchildren are a bit better but still not right. Lucas has vomitted this morning and Alice has an awful fungus in her mouth which has now got to her throat causing all the vomitting.

I have had lovely feedback from one of my "Notting Hill to Brazil" book readers in France today. It is nice to be encouraged like this. She has now passed the book on for others to read. I also had positive feedback on the book today from Dr. Dewi Hughes (Wales - Tearfund Theology Consultant) so that's nice too.

We leave for our Euro trip 2 weeks today. Help! I have so much to do prior to this. I just don't know how we are going to catch the plane on September 1st! Please pray.

Oh Lord!

I am just about to leave to preach at Princesa Isabel. Liz is no longer going with me as Alice has worsened in health and is vomitting a lot. Pastor Schoeps commented this morning that this is another real attack of the evil one upon us as we desperately try to get ready to go to Europe. He commented how we underwent a similar attack with problems in the Patos church prior to the Celebration here in Brazil. Your prayers are indeed valued.

6.30am Start

Philip left at 6.30am for Princesa Isabel with a Kombi load of young people accompanying him. They should be arriving there shortly. Philip is the speaker this morning at the 3rd of 4 services in the Princesa Isabel EAB/ACEV 70 year celebrations. I will be going there later to be the speaker at the final service. Please pray.

5 weeks to Celebration!

The EAB 70th anniversary Celebration will be held 5 weeks today at the Millbrook Christian Centre in Southampton on September 20th. Liz and I plan to be there. Do you?

As soon as I receive the times and programme from the EAB UK Board I will let you have them. There will be a special fellowship tea before the Celebration and in previous years the tea has been at 5.30pm and the Celebration at 7pm. I know there will be an EAB anniversary cake at the tea, amongst other things, and there will be a pre-Celebration auction too and I have been asked to repeat my auctioneer act of a few years ago!  All proceeds will go to EAB and we will be taking some interesting items for this from Brazil to add to other things folk are donating in the UK. Should be fun!

Moringa seeds

Someone has contacted me today requesting Moringa tree seeds at a place in the extreme north of Brazil. He believes the leaves will cure his daughter from a skin complaint. Thus on Monday we'll be sending him some seeds.

We have passed the 37,000 hit mark on this blog. Many thanks to one and all!

I still haven't managed to finish tomorrow's sermon for Princesa Isabel but I'm nearly there.

Oh no! QPR lost at Sheffield and have collapsed from 6th to 15th spot!

Golden Night

I watched some Olympics last night, with Philip & Sacha, as the time difference is better for us than for the UK. I saw the British girl win in the swimming live, as I saw her win the other day too. Great Britain is certainly doing very well in the medals table. Brazil won its first gold medal in swimming last night too. Both Brazil's men and women teams in the football are through to the semi-finals.

Our grandchildrens' health looks brighter on both fronts today. Lucas is smiling again, though still very weak, and Alice seems to be brushing off her problem.

This weekend in the anniversary weekend for the EAB/ACEV Princesa Isabel church. The first service was inside the church last night when Pastor Gersé preached. Tonight and tomorrow night the services will be in the street in front of the church with a borrowed stage used for the P&W group and preacher. I will be preaching tomorrow night and Philip will be preaching tomorrow morning. Princesa Isabel is the oldest EAB church.

With all the present turmoil in the air travel market we are looking for low cost options for groups that come to visit the work here. Thomsons seem to have pulled out of Brazil and at the moment Condor seems to be the best option. If anyone is an expert in this field please give us your thoughts.

Blaze of Nature

My walk at Green Pastures this afternoon took me through extreme north-eastern Brazilian natural beauty. The stream is drying up now as the heat increases and the rains have gone. This means we had a flock of Common Egrets (like white herons) feeding on the fish which are an easy catch in the shallow waters. Rufescent Tiger-Herons were enjoying the same party! Tarcísio, who lives there with his family, and also leads the church there with Jucineide's help, has already started to plant water-grass in the shallow water of the stream and in the seepage from the lake. This will be vital food for animals later in the year as the drought bites again, but it already brings a lovely fresh green colouring amidst the greying-browning bushland.

The Moringa and Tamarind trees are heavy with pods. It is a lovely sight. The Moringa tree seed bank will start to be re-stocked whilst we're away on our Euro trip as I should think the pods will be dry and popping in about 6 weeks time. The seed bank is down to 18 kgs at this time which is very low. The Tamarind trees (which are used in making HP sauce amongst other things. Look on the bottle label!) are absolutely laden with pods after the fantastic rains in 2008 but sadly nobody round our parts has a use for them and there is no market for them. If I could clone myself I would do research into finding ways of making use of the Tamarind pods which are bitter/sweet and produce a delicious anti-cholesterol sticky fruit.

So I could go on... our 5 wild domestic rabbits were frolicking around in the late afternoon sunlight and our hairsheep were quietly examining a new ram that has just arrived in a swap with our old ram. Perhaps I should say that the ram was doing a lot of sniffing of the sheep... but I'd better not go on!

Getting back home I found Lucas looking awfully weak and frail, though a little better than this morning. The paediatrician has now banned him from breast-feeding and said he must get on to solids. He is so painfully thin, bless him, and has no reserves to cope with a violent bout of dehydration like he's been through. Alice is a bit off colour but seems to be weathering the storm thus far.

Lucas is home

Our grandson Lucas is home from hospital. PTL!  He is still somewhat weak from his ordeal but was well enough to come home this morning and will now be well cared for at home. Now Alice has a fever but apparently her problem is respiratory and has nothing to do with the intestinal problems Lucas had.

This morning has been frustrating with people turning up and phone ringing non-stop and I had aimed to finish my sermon for Sunday by lunch today, but made no more progress. Sacha presses on with the EAB ActionChild report packages and has sent more to the UK office today. I will need to pop out to Green Pastures this afternoon and check things over.

Those that live in the south of England please don't forget the "Send the Light" EAB launch celebration next Wednesday at West Wellow Chapel in Canada Road. The thanksgiving service will be held on exactly the day, 20th August, that founder EAB Missionaries, Bert and Daisy Mundy, sailed from Southampton to Recife, Brazil, with 3rd class tickets on the HMS Almanzora 70 years ago. West Wellow Chapel was the home church of the founders so it is lovely that the current members and friends are commemorating the EAB launch in this way. The service is being organized and will be convened by Neil Parsons who is a present day member of the EAB UK Board.

Illuminated

The new illuminated sign at the Patos Bible College is shining brightly and looks great! I've just got back from there where I sorted a few other things out too. Then I popped in to visit Lucas at the hospital again. He was asleep and seems to have a fair way to go before being allowed home.

Now Alice has gone down with a fever (cause unknown as yet) and I just hope it's not going to be the same as Lucas.

I am starting to prepare Sunday's sermon for Princesa Isabel. I have also been sorting projects to do with Geneva Global and discussing a group visit planned by 12 from Tearfund in October 2009. I have also been working on things linked to the curriculum of the Princesa Isabel Bible College.

Very sad story coming from the João Pessoa Action School where one of the sponsored children has gone into thin air with his mum as the parents split up and the father was threatening to kill the mother so mum and kids have had to disappear to survive. Please pray.

Lucas improving

I have been to visit Lucas in hospital and was happy to see him looking much brighter than last night although still with fever and strong smelling stools. He clearly has a nasty tummy infection. The paediatrician says he had reached 3rd degree dehydration last night so it is good to see him re-hydrated but still on a drip and unlikely to come home today. He is a bit more of a handful now that he is feeling better and both Liz and Gyl are with him 24 hours. Please continue to pray.

I have been sorting out an illuminated sign for the new location of the Patos Bible College. It is good for the College and for the Gospel to draw attention to the place and I hope we will have the sign up by tomorrow.

I have been translating the last bits of the sub-titles for the Tenda do Encontro P&W group's DVD so that we can take some to Europe with us. I have also been organizing Gisliany and Marcia's trip to Recife next week for module 2 of a course they are doing on HIV/AIDS for the Care Centre. There is so much to do that I just don't know how we are going to get on that plane on September 1st.

Lucas continues in hospital

Liz spent the night at the hospital with Gylmara and Lucas. He had a reasonable night but is a bit restless this morning, clearly has an intestinal infection, and remains on a drip.

Today is the 6th anniversary of my Father's death. Dad would have been 83 today had he still been with us. He died on a visit to Brazil in our home in Patos in 2002. My Mum lives in the UK at Basingstoke so it will be nice to see her again next month on our Euro Tour. Anyone interested in reading what I wrote at the time of Dad's death can do so at: www.culturapatos.com.br/medcraft Our thanks go to God once again today for wonderful parents. I played Dad at Scrabble via email till the day he died. He was 8 x 7 up in the championship so took the gold medal with him to heaven!  Anyone interested in paying Scrabble with someone at a distance like this can do so free via www.scrabble-master.hekman.net

Lucas admitted to hospital

Dra. Paula spent about an hour at home this evening and despite all her efforts, and despite an anti-vommit drug injection, she ended up phoning Lucas's paediatrician and recommending that he be admitted to hospital. This happened quickly and diarrheia has already developed so clearly it is an intestinal infection. Lucas has been put straight on a drip in his head (best place for little children) to re-hydrate him and get him on an antibiotic. He has now gone to sleep.

The 9 month old daughter of the HIV positive woman being helped by the Care Centre has congenital cataracts and we are arranging for her to be operated on. This particular problem seems to becoming a Care Centre speciality! I have been discussing this case with Dr. Paula this evening.

One up one down

Ivy is now much better. Thanks for your prayers. Now it's little Lucas's turn with vomitting, diagnosed as being caused by some food which has upset him. He has had to have injections to stop the vomitting as he is already dehydrated. Please pray.

I have just completed the weekly Brazilian ACEV Update and dispatched it. It is quite a big job each week because everything has to be edited/re-written/corrected/adjusted. If all our leaders sent in news and photos ready to go it would be a piece of cake but it is not like that at all. One brother sent in news from Itaporanga this week which was so detailed that I thought he was going to tell us who had sneezed in the services!

Unbelievable Redemption!

One of the mobile phones stolen from the Campina Grande Bible College last night belonged to our Pastor Jânio. So this morning he decided to make a phone call to his own mobile and offered the man that answered £100 for the stolen goods to be returned!  The thief agreed!

Pastor Wostenes, the senior pastor, phoned me to ask what I thought and both of us felt nervous for Pastor Jânio's safety in the transaction. However Pastor Jânio arranged with the thieves for the goods to be returned to the church with him on one side of the steel church fence and the thieves on the other! This has just happened successfully and we have received all the stolen goods back and paid a £100 redemption fee!

This is the incredible Brazil as I see it and live it! But just think that this was what God did for us in Christ, only the cost was far greater! We did what we did this morning most begrudgingly against our wills, but God redeemed us willingly and full of grace and love!

Bible College Robbed at gunpoint

We travelled home from Campina Grande last night and little did we know that as we were travelling the Campina Grande Bible College was being robbed at gunpoint. 2 smartly dressed motorbike riders wearing crash helmets burst into the reception area of the College alongside our church brandishing a revolver and stole our digital projector, a computer screen, 2 mobile phones and 7 crash helmets belonging to students in the classrooms. Those in the classrooms at the time knew nothing of the incident until afterwards. Pastor Wostenes was actually teaching when it happened. 3 office staff were in the reception area - Flávia, Fátima and Rosângela. Naturally everyone is shaken up and Pastor Wostenes's blood pressure rocketed. I have just spoken to him on the phone and discussed further security measures that will have to be taken. Urban insecurity and violence in Brazil is now out of control. Please pray.

Check ups done

Liz, Lynn & me have had our cardiology checks done and Lynn's blood pressure was higher that Liz's and mine which were normal. Lynn will have further tests to discover why her BP is high. I just need more excercise. We have just had a snack and will then be driving back to Patos so should get home about 10pm.

I had an excellent meeting in the doctor's surgery waiting room with Pastor Wostenes and his wife. We just took over some chairs to one side and made the most of the time with full scale discussions on our projects etc. I think the other people there couldn't quite take it in!

Campina Grande

Liz, Lynn and me are just off to Campina Grande for cardiologist check ups. Mine is long over due. These are routine checks. It's a 2 hour drive each way, with 2 and a half if we get traffic, so adding up with the waiting room hours this means a full day to see the doctor!  I have told Pastor Wostenes we can have a meeting in the quack's waiting room this afternoon!

Ivy is steadily but very slowly getting over her pneumonia. Thanks for your prayers.

Sacha has sent off 10 more EAB ActionChild report packages to the UK office so we are progressing. I, amidst everything else, am trying to get the weekly Brazilian ACEV Update out and make progress with the EAB presentation. I am running out of time!

Champions!

My daughter-in-law, Gylmara, has passed university entrance exams in first place and will be shortly starting a degree course in modern languages. Congratulations Gylmara! We're proud of you!

Ben & Miriam Price are also walking on air as their 6 year old son, Josias, has just won an inter-school general knowledge competition at Ibiara. He got through the first rounds of questions without putting a foot wrong and it then got to the students of all ages stage where 4 were left in the semi-final. Josias made it to the final and in the decisive round of questions he got them all right and defeated his opponent to take the Ibiara trophy and a cheque for £30! His mum and dad are as proud as punch!  Well done Josias! You're the champion!

See it for yourself at: http://medcraft.fotoblog.uol.com.br

The Father's day service went well last night. Pastor Schoeps preached and the P&W group did great. One little girl was dedicated.

I am pressing on with my preparations for our Euro Trip which is 3 weeks today. There is so much to do and a lot of pressure as I can't just concentrate on this. Your prayers are really valued.

New Church Plant

Pastor Valdemy has been sharing with me about the new church plant at Mandacaru Community in his County of Manaíra. This is yet another church plant in the County which all started at Caroá 25 years ago. PTL! The 4 Legs Project is going well there too with goats/hair sheep from Cajá now going to Flores and Tavares.

I have also spoken to Pastor Umbirajara who travelled from João Pessoa to teach at the Princesa Isabel Bible College yesterday - morning, afternoon and night. He thoroughly enjoyed it and has stayed on to preach in the Princesa Isabel church today.

I am preparing the PowerPoint presentation for our Euro Tour and am at last getting in to it and making progress. Please pray.

Saturday's Concert started on Sunday!

Last night's Aline Barros Christian Concert in Patos was supposed to start at 8.30pm but in fact started at 12.30am this Sunday morning!  It finished at 2am!  I am so relieved that it did take place at all after the mess up we had with the no-show by another singer in June. This time the problem was the stage which was brought from João Pessoa broken! So they had to repair it before the concert could start.  I mean I wasn't directly involved in the concert but it reflects so badly on the Gospel when things go badly wrong. Hence my relief that eventually the concert did take place.

Philip, Gyl & Sacha went and they said it was quite good. I slept in Alice's room and Liz in Lucas's room so that the mums could go. Alice is now walking tentatively and yells "grandad" at me in English which I rather like!

Today is Fathers' Day in Brazil so memories come flooding back of 6 years ago when my dear Dad was here for his last Father's Day.

Vazante church plant progress

I have just received an encouraging email from Ben Price who leads the Ibiara EAB/ACEV church. A few miles from Ibiara we have an on-going church plant, with the help of a group of folk from other parts of Brazil, at a village called Vazante. Not long ago we lost our rented hall there so we have put up a temporary meeting hall in the front garden of the rented house where our team is living. Anyway Ben has been there today for a baptism and this is what he wrote:

"Had a great time at Vazante this morning. A Motorbike-taxi man who has been frequenting our church gave me a lift and we had a good talk on the way (no crash helmets obviously!). We were expecting to baptise 3 but discovered that a 4th wanted to be baptised too. We held a meeting under a big tree next to the river at Tamanduá and there was a beautiful sense of God´s presence there - nice and quiet with just an acoustic guitar and lots of birds singing to accompany the worship. I did the baptisms in the river and felt to give the opportunity for anyone else to get baptised (I don´t normally do that!). When I came out of the river Pastor Pedro's eldest daughter (who lives in Campina Grande and who has only just become a Christian) asked to be baptised by her dad. It was really lovely. We then had a communion service under the tree and at the end Pedro gave an appeal and a small boy, an adolescent girl and my motorbike-taxi driver made decisions for the Lord. We then all had dinner together before heading for home. When we got back the motorbike-taxi driver wouldn't receive any payment for the journey. It was a wonderful time and encouraged me loads.

The meeting hall that they built in front of one of the houses in Vazante looks really good and there are rumours that the owner wants to sell the house. Nezinho says that he would ask a fair price and not try and rip us off so we'll wait and see what happens. There´s loads of space there - plenty of land to build a school too".

So PTL folks, and let's pray for the church plant and the need for a building sooner or later at the village of Vazante.

Majestic QPR

QPR are in the play-off section of the Championship league after a blinding victory over Barnsley 2 x 1 with 2 goals (and a missed penalty to encourage the visitors) by central defender Fitz Hall.

The best Patos monthly newspaper has an excellent half page article, plus 8 photos, about the EAB/ACEV 70 year Celebration held in Patos on July 19th. The article is excellent and the whole thing is very glorifying to God.

News in from the EAB/ACEV Soledade church is good with 4 having come to Christ there and a new rural church plant commenced to add to the one already on the go. The Bread of Life project is working well there too and 150 people are being helped each month with food donations. PTL for the right mix... bread of both sorts... water of both sorts... we have the right mix... the Jesus mix!

Philip is spending the whole day at Green Pastures with Louisa, Felipe, Arthur and John David. He's taken food and drink and says he is even going to teach them to play cricket!

6 Weeks Today

6 weeks today, Saturday, September 20th, will be the big EAB 70th anniversary Celebration. Wales has confirmed its presence in the persons of Pr. Mike Holmes + Mal Thomas with their respective wives.  Brazil will be present in the persons of Liz and I plus Betânia Ferreira who is our future missionary to Uruguay. The Brazilian on my photoblog will not be present owing to a lack of a passport!  Please check him out at: http://medcraft.fotoblog.uol.com.br

Also confirmed for the big event are: The Mayor Of Southampton, Bob & Jo Dalton (Bucks) & Peter & Vanessa Court (Somerset). But will you be there? Please confirm your presence a.s.a.p.

Tomorrow is Fathers' Day in Brazil and tonight there will be a big Gospel Concert with the singer from Rio de Janeiro, Aline Barros, and her band. She is very good indeed. We pray it will touch many lives.

DVD

The Care Centre has scored another hit today with the discovery that a lady had been completly wrongly diagnosed or misled into believing she had a serious illness with devious intentions. Dr. Paula discovered the whole mess and the lady is now correctly medicated and really relieved. I daren't give the details as it is just too dangerous in the light of the nature of the perpetrators of this evil.

I have been wading through stacks of translation for the DVD sub-titles of Tenda do Encontro, our Campina Grande P&W group, which is excellent. We are up against a deadline so that copies can be produced in time for us to take to Europe. The job is massive, but we are getting there!

Sacha has sent the first 8 EAB ActionChild packages, for the second half of 2008, to our UK office. It's a start, but there's an awful long way to go!

Ivy much brighter

Ivy Dyer is much chirpier this morning. I think her health has turned the corner for the better. A big advantage that she has, on top of the fact that most of her blood test levels are excellent (cholesterol etc.), is that she has virtually never taken anti-biotics in her life. Hence the response in her case is excellent to the treatment she is undergoing for pneumonia.

I've already had a walk round town to get some exercise and got greeted (as usual) with "Good morning Pastor" every few steps. Liz is out on Care Centre duty as is Gersé picking up the senior citizens for their day at the Centre.

EAB T-shirts

We are producing an EAB 70th anniversary T-shirt (Made in Brazil) with the EAB 70 Years logo on the front and 1 John 3:18 on the back: "let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth". Each arm will have the normal EAB logo. The idea is to sell these for a fiver (cost price) to spead the word of EAB and increase the celebrations! If you would like one don't send money now but do tell us if you definitely want one or more so that we know where we are. Please email us at: eabrazil@gmail.com

Don't forget the EAB "launch day" Celebration at West Wellow on Wednesday evening, August 20, and the big 70th anniversary Celebration in Southampton on Saturday, September 20, in the evening with a special free tea (even with an EAB birthday cake) prior to the service.

Care Centre action flows

I worked till gone 11pm last night finishing and sending out the weekly ACEV Brazilian Update.

We have had an excellent meeting with the Care Centre's Dr. Paula and she is out on visits with Liz right now. They are a great pair together. I know they are visiting a lady who has been disgustingly treated by her son and is very ill as well as elderly. I can't go into details as the son is very violent and dangerous. They are also going to visit an HIV positive young mum with a 9 month old baby and taking her food from the Care Centre food bank and support in whatever way she needs and we are able to help. You may know that we are hoping for a new HIV/AIDS project to be approved soon by Tearfund, but necessity dictates so we are involved anyway whilst we wait. Please pray.

Dr. Paula has also been accompanying Ivy very well and very slowly Ivy is improving from her pneumonia. Ivy is having another physiotherapy session right now.

The Care Centre continues its regular work with the deaf, with senior citizens, with the food bank and bread of life work, and in partnership with the primary and support schools we run in a poor borough of Patos.

I have been sorting out a variety of issues at the beginning of the semester at the EAB/ACEV Bible Colleges. Sacha is getting her teeth into the second semester ActionChild report packages and should soon be able to start some dispatching to Sallie Irish and her ActionChild team in the UK.

Robberies are becoming increasingly common in Patos. Yesterday our daughter Deborah's neighbours saw a gun put to the head of their little grandchild whilst thieves ransacked the house and took all they could find of worth. The Grandad is now in hospital as a result of the shock.

News about Ivy is that she is about the same. She had a series of blood tests done this morning so we will see what these show, but she is definitely coffing a bit less. She has just had her second physiotherapy treatment.

I am snowballed with so much work that it's still impossible for me to get anything ready for our Euro Tour. I must get the Brazilian weekly Update out today and am trying to get workers paid, but I get non-stop interruptions.

Liz, Lynn and myself are going for cardiological check-ups next week so we have had routine blood checks for cholesterol, and the likes, done today.

The extremes of abuse

We are trying to help with a very sad case at Imaculada at the moment. ActionChild, Sara Regenda, who will be 5 in a few days time, has a fifteen year old sister who was going out with a 25 year old man. Her father opposed the relationship and so in revenge, copying an idea she got from a similar case on the TV news, the 15 year girl denouced her father to the police for sexual abuse. The father was arrested at his house, handcuffed and insulted by the police, and kept in jail for 2 days before the farce was discovered.

The 15 year old daughter then ran away with the boyfriend and is living with him, and Sara and her little brothers and sisters are left utterly traumatized and terrified that their father could be arrested again and be ill-treated by the police etc. So traumatized are the 4 little kids that they will not leave their Dad at all and even when he goes road-sweeping (which is his job) the 4 little children follow the father and go everywhere with him. Please pray for Sara and her family at this time.

We know of an even worse version of this story when the Father, in a similar situation, was killed by his jailmates, only for it to be discovered later that it had all been a pack of lies.

Robbery

I have just had an email from Ana Carolina in Recife. She did her MSc at Durham University and we know her through the link we used to have in support of that university's research here in Brazil. Her husband was held up at gun point last night and they lost their car for the second time, in this way, in 3 years. Her desperation has made me feel very sad.

A pastor friend, also in Recife, died suddenly yesterday, aged 54. This was further sad news today. I had preached at conferences years ago with Arnulfo Barbosa. A lovely brother.

I have had discussions on projects today with Pastor Wostenes and I am struggling on trying to prepare for the UK. Ivy is struggling on with her pneumonia too. She is OK but clearly weakened. It is no fun having pneumonia at any age, but at 85 it is quite a battle.

Physiotherapy

Dr. Paula's morning call to check the progress of Ivy has made her opt for Physiotherapy to help Ivy expectorate from her lungs which are both now affected by pneumonia. A physiotherapist will visit our home each morning to work with Ivy. Your prayers continue to be valued for Ivy.

Boys will be boys!

I have learnt of an hilarious incident in church on Sunday night which of course, with me leading the Communion service, I missed. Our churches here have the custom of distributing the bread at Communion and everybody holds on to their bread until everyone has bread, and then the pastor invites everyone to eat together. This basically comes from a mis-interpretation of 1 Cor.11:33 from before I ever got here, 36 years ago last Sunday, but it doesn't really matter anyway.

The funny thing is that every time a slow worship song is struck up Alice goes into 'worship mode' and raises her hands to heaven. Hence in the Communion service this is what happened... but where was Lucas? He was nipping round nicking the bits of bread out of people's hands as they had their eyes closed and eating them!

Later in the service Lucas was up on the front row doing his best to do the sign language for the deaf, imitating the interpreter doing this for the deaf fellowship!

Ivy a bit better

85 year old EAB veteran missionary, Ivy Dyer, is a bit improved from her pneumonia today. We can certainly see the results of swift early action by Dr. Paula and she is looking brighter and the fever under control. Ivy is coughing a lot and weak but is certainly on the mend. This morning she had breakfast at the table (of her own chosing) and is worrying about who is washing the clothes (her domain!). Please continue to pray for Ivy.

Liz and I are struggling, amidst all else we have on, to prepare presentations for the UK trip in less than 4 weeks time. There is so much to say. The issue is what to say in such a way as to be interesting and relevant to UK churches.
